REOS 088: Bellinzona station 2006

In February 2006 REOS visited the station of Bellinzona, the capital of the Canton Tessin. The origin of this historic town with it's three impressive castles goes back to the middle ages.
The station is situated on the Southern side of the Gotthard Pass and serves the same operational purpose as Arth-Goldau and Erstfeld, which are situated on the Northern side of this famous line. All passenger trains crossing the Gotthard have to stop at Bellinzona which also provides S-bahn services to the local area. Most train crews either start or finish their shift at Bellinzona.
Freight trains also often stop here, either for a driver or locomotive change. Trains that run to Chiasso and climb the Mont Ceneri sometimes have a helper added to the rear but when the route to Italy is over Luino, only a single engine is needed.
Bellinzona is also famous for its maintenance workshop. Refurbished locomotives with brand new wheels can often be seen being shunted around the yard at the north end of the station.
