REOS 060 En: With the Breithorn to the Matterhorn

Since 1891 there have been trains travelling between Visp and
Zermatt.
In the early years, the railway company was known
as VZ, later extending to Brig, and known as the BVZ.
In
January 2003 the BVZ merged with the Furka-Oberalp-Bahn
to form the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn.
The steam loco, “Breithorn” originates from the early years of
the VZ, long before the electrification of this interesting
narrow gauge railway line, that makes use of the “Abt” rack
and pinion system in some locations.
On a couple of occasions a year, the Breithorn, that has been
modified to oil consumption instead of coal, makes a run from
Brig to Zermatt with an option to travel from Zermatt to
Findelbach, the first stop on the Gornergrat Bahn.
In the first part of the film we follow train on its journey to
Täsch including spectacular shots of parallel running with the
locomotive. In Kalpetran we witness an unusual shunting
procedure using the siding.
From Täsch we take our place in the open air wagon, and with
two cameras we show you the spectuacular surroundings whilst
you enjoy the lovely sound of this little 4 cylinder steamer.
Then finally, up the Gornergratbahn to Findelbach station.
Again a sound to remember with close-ups of the loco, and
some unforgettable views over Zermatt with a clear and sunny
Matterhorn.
Running time: 58 minutes.
DVD+R, Stereo/Dolby surround©.
